Pre-Nationals and Pre-Season Camps

AFA’s competitive camps are designed to prepare fencers for the upcoming season, including fencers that are already competing or are ready to compete for the first time. These are intense camps, and fencers must come ready to work hard.

Apex Fencing Academy prides itself on maintaining a very low camper to instructor ratio to provide high-quality camps for our fencers. Therefore, we ask that you register for the camp ASAP.

Daily schedule includes:

  • Strength & conditioning training
  • Fencing footwork
  • Technique and tactics
  • Group lessons
  • Situational bouting
  • Mental preparation for competition
  • Individual and team competitions

Special topics include armory, team training, and how to prepare for competition. Fencers who are currently in the Competitive-Team or the Pre-Competitive program are encouraged to attend the camp.

Pre-Nationals Camp

The Pre–Nationals camp  prepares fencers for the National Championships and July Challenge. Fencers will work on sharpening their mental focus, and fine tuning their skills for competition. All fencers who compete regularly are welcome to attend even if they are not competing in the National Championships.

It is very important that the fencers in the Pre-Competitive and AFA Team programs attend this summer camp even if they are not competing at Summer Nationals.

Who should attend the Pre-Nationals camp?

  • Fencers who are competing at Nationals
  • Fencers who plan on competing regularly next season  (even if they are NOT competing at Nationals)

We are excited to have the following coaching staff for our Pre-Nationals camp:

  • AFA Coaches: Kriszti Hovanyi, Lucas Mochko, Ahmed Abdallah – Duke Epee Coach
  • UNC Head Coach Matt Jednak

Pre-Season Camps

Following the success of our pre-season camps of the past summers, we are now offering two weeks of all-day camps.

The Pre-Season camps in August are great camps for all fencers who wish to get ready for the season. Fencers will be prepared for the first tournaments of the new season, which are only a few weeks away.

We are excited to have the following coaching staff for our Pre-Nationals camp:

AFA Coaches: Kriszti Hovanyi, Lucas Mochko, Ahmed Abdallah – Duke Epee Coach
UNC Head Coach Matt Jednak

Who should attend the camp?

  • Fencers looking to get a head start and be physically ready to train
  • Fencers currently in the AFA team and Pre-Competitive programs are expected to attend
  • Fencers who are interested in joining the Pre-competitive program for the upcoming season are expected to attend at least one of these camps
  • Fencers ages 10 and over, who want to take their training to the next level

We highly recommend that fencers attend both camps if possible.

Fencers need to bring the following items to camp every day (in a bag) and label all items with their NAME:

  • Complete fencing gear
  • Extra t-shirt to change and a small towel
  • If you have shoes specifically for fencing, please bring another pair of athletic shoes for non-fencing activities

  • Exercise mat

Camp activities: Warmup, conditioning, footwork, skills and drills, bouting, armory, stretching/yoga, sports psychology and mental preparation.

Dates and times:

  • 9am – 4pm for both Pre-Season camps
