Coach/National Referee

Maddie Long

Maddie started fencing at Apex Fencing Academy when she was 12 years old. Since then, she has been a high performer for Region 6 in both foil and epee for Y14, Cadet, and Junior age groups and placed top 16 in NACs. Before she started coaching, she was a mentor for many young fencers in the club. Maddie mostly coaches at AFA
summer camps while she is attending college.

“I love introducing fencing to new athletes. Watching them grow in skill and passion motivates me to keep improving as a coach. I hope to see more young fencers compete regionally and nationally.”

Maddie’s competitive background sparked her interest in officiating. She is now an N2 nationally rated referee with the goal of getting her FIE rating for foil and working at the Olympics.

“Another aspiration I have for the club is to develop our aspiring referees. Officiating is a key part of the sport that helped me understand what I was doing and why my actions were getting called certain ways at a much higher level.” -Coach Maddie
