Wesley works as head coach for the NC State Fencing Club, while also providing excellent coaching for Apex Fencing Academy students. He first came to coach with us in the spring of 2018, and has proven to be an invaluable addition. “I started fencing at my high school club with a few friends. I trained unsupported without a coach during college to moderate success, earning a C and a B in foil and epee respectively. It wasn’t until after college that I started taking lessons with the UNC coaches; Joe Alter, Matt Jednak, and Ron Miller.”
“I started coaching by accident. There was a young fencer who kept coming to me for help and advice despite having no club affiliation. After mentoring him for a few months, he went on to earn several National medals. I really loved helping his development decided to formally start coaching. I love sharing my passion for the sport and seeing students grow.”
“My coaching revolves around directed problem solving with the end goal of self sufficiency in competitive environments. Instead of trying to build a wide range of technical skills, I focus on the mastery of a tighter skillset and how to use them in a variety of situations.” – Coach Wesley
